Demonstration Alert - U.S. Embassy Bangkok,
Thailand (February 19, 2021)

Location: Bangkok, Thailand

Event:  U.S. Embassy Bangkok informs U.S. citizens that protest activity is expected to be held in front of the parliament at 5:00 pm today.  There are also reports of protests throughout the weekend.  The U.S. Embassy advises U.S. citizens to avoid areas of demonstrations, protests, and large gatherings.  Recent political gatherings have taken place with little to no notice.

Reports indicate the political gatherings described above could involve large crowds of participants.  Plan ahead for the possibility of traffic and other potential disruptions in downtown Bangkok.  Additional demonstrations are possible in the coming days.

Although violence is not expected, even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.  Avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.  U.S. citizens should monitor local news and social media reports before traveling to downtown Bangkok this weekend.

Actions to Take:

Monitor local media and our Embassy website for updates, and check your email for further alerts;

Avoid crowds;

Avoid demonstrations;

Be aware of your surroundings;

Review your personal security plans;

Follow the instructions of local authorities.
