And of course our future tram system will go there.

LungBing, is that before or after the bus station, Immigration or the tram system become extinct?

Hypothetical :
With some embassies not issuing affidavits of income any longer and maybe more embassies following suit. Maybe Thai Immigration is expecting fewer expats in the coming years.
Possible they are back tracking and thinking about closing some immigration offices in the North East part of the country. The newer ones like Maha Sarakham, Roi et, Chaiyaphum, etc.
They will have to go back to their old immigration office which was Khon Kaen.
Could be a reason to move it to the bus station. People can travel from their hometown bus stations to Khon Kaen and back.
Like I said, just a hypothetical.

Don't give them any ideas!  Pray to the god of your choice that we all do not have to go back to Nong Khai.

I wouldn't worry too much about that. If past experience means anything, the Thai government can't plan that far in advance!

But, retfed50 going back to Nong Khai, that would not be planning in advance that would be backward planning
