Open discussion / Just checking
« on: July 12, 2019, 12:39:23 PM »

I just got an email. Said it's from Mocrosoft and Titled, "Updating our terms of use".

I'm really careful what I open. Anyone got this or know if it's safe?

Where to find . . . / Fed-ex KhonKaen

Google says there is one, but their facebook page says, "no location available".

Open discussion / New train station
« on: March 29, 2019, 02:02:45 PM »

I stopped in to check out the new train station last week. It looks very nice, clean and looks VERY expensive. I guess it will do everything you want a train station to do. But, I noticed right away, I missed the old station. The old station was worn and dirty, but it had character.

Maybe this station is better and I'm just an old man thinking about "The good old days" and wishing I could relive my youth. Anyway, good luck to the new station.

Open discussion / US Outreach
« on: February 20, 2019, 10:11:37 AM »

Rumor on Thaivisa is they may be doing away with the outreach visits because most of what they do is the visa income letters. I couldn't find any info about it, but they normally would be around about now.

Where to find . . . / Looking for a printer service
« on: February 07, 2019, 01:12:57 PM »

Now and then I need to print out something. The internet shop I used to use has closed. Anyone know a shop in KK with a printer, and possibly a scanner?

Open discussion / New laptop
« on: December 28, 2018, 12:44:34 PM »

A little over 4 years ago, I bought my first laptop. It didn't come with windows, so they sent me to a shop to buy a Windows 8 disc, and they installed it for me. A couple of years later they did the free upgrade to Windows 10 for me.

Google says a laptop is good for 3-5 years. Mine is acting up lately, so I may need to buy a new one soon.

I would like to know if I buy a new laptop, can I use the windows disc I still have, or transfer Windows from the old laptop to the new one?  ( I'm guessing the answer is no.) Also, is it better to buy a Windows disc and install it, or should I buy a laptop with Windows already installed?

Where can I buy a fireproof box. I don't want anything large and I'm not looking for a safe, just something to keep passports, bankbooks, important papers etc, safe from fire.

Open discussion / Animal rescue foundation
« on: June 10, 2018, 02:31:07 PM »

I recently discovered an animal rescue shelter not far from where I live. It is run by a couple of Swiss ladies with a very dedicated Thai staff. It is in Ban Fang, about 35 km from KK.

I stopped by one day and was given a tour. It was very impressive. Over 500 dogs, cats, pigs and ducks. They have large pens for the animals, so there is no crowding, a medical section, large commercial type kitchen, and they even have a swimming pool for the dogs.

I'm not a dog lover, (I love my dog), but I hate to see animals suffer, and I see it every day here. The compassion these ladies have for animals is wonderful. They will not turn away any animal in need. They get calls in the middle of the night that a dog has been injured and they will go right away to get the dog.

As I said, it was very impressive. The only negative was when they showed me the medical unit. There are many crippled dogs, all as a result of being hit by cars, and they have several dogs with open wounds. The dogs are well taken care of and their wounds are cleaned and their bandages changed every day. Still, it was very difficult for me to see that.

I know many foreigners are looking for volunteer opportunities and this foundation accepts volunteers.  If anyone is interested, they have a facebook page, a youtube video, ( volunteer at saved souls animal sanctuary), and a website (saved souls animal

I hope this isn't against forum rules to post this. I have nothing to do with the foundation, I just think it is a noble cause and with the problem of homeless and unwanted dogs, it's good to see someone is doing something to help.

Open discussion / Thai old age pension
« on: March 20, 2018, 02:02:17 PM »

My wife has applied for her old age pension and filled out the paperwork to have it deposited into her Krung Thai account.

Now, we want to know when she will get her first payment. Her birthday was in Feb, but the village elders are telling her she won't see the first deposit untill next year!

Sounds a bit off, but they do some crazy stuff here, so I don't know what to believe.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Open discussion / Warning! Keep your "tabien loat" (car book) IN the car!
« on: February 02, 2018, 11:34:28 AM »

This may be common knowledge to most, but it's new to me.

I got pulled over at a police checkpoint the other day. I never worry because I always have everything in order. The cop looked at my license, walked around and looked at the tax sticker, and then asked to see the car book. (Tabien loat) I told him I keep it at home so I don't lose it.

He said I should at least have a copy of it in the car and sent me off to the side to pay a fine.

I've had this pickup truck for 20 years and been stopped many times, even paid a few fines, (Just last month for not wearing a seatbelt). I've never been asked for car book before.

200 bht, no big deal, but a new one for me.

Open discussion / Spaying a dog
« on: January 31, 2018, 12:44:24 PM »

We want to get our female dog spayed but not sure where we should go. We usually take our dogs to the KKU animal hospital, but they often have student vets and for this surgery, we would prefer someone with more experience.

Visas, et al / Extension renewal
« on: November 24, 2017, 01:09:02 PM »

Just did my annual retirement extension. 15 minutes, in and out!  Walked in the door and the very nice lady at desk #3 waved me right over.

Usually, a little bid different each year. This time, I paid right there instead of going to a different desk and then back to the original desk. Also, she did the 90 day for me.

I've been going to this office since they opened, and never had a bad experience. Everyone has always been pleasant, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Nothing like the place we used to have to go.

I have one question. I always go prepared, all nessesary documents and a few extras, just in case. In March this year, I went to India and when doing my extension, the lady wanted a copy of my re-entry permit. That's no problem, I went outside and got a copy, but I was just wondering, is this a one time thing, or will I need a copy of that every year from now on?
