Here is a decen website from the Pattaya Expats Club.

I have never heard of the rule that allows you to renew even if your license had expired for any period of time, especially 1 year.  You definitely need a visa not a tourist stamp and proof of an address in Thailand.

This is true, I think. When my wife returned to Thailand her license had expired (albeit for probably more than a year). She had to do the whole initial license thing. But I do think there might be some discretion at the license office as to what they need for renewal or even initiation.

Needed to renew my driver's license,  expires in a couple of days.

As usual, went to a clinic to get the medical certificate saying that I don't have any issues with the five items about which they ask.  Paid my 40 baht.

We drove over to the Land & Transport Office, Bldg 2.

Went inside all prepared with my Passport, my Yellow Book, my Pink Card, my expirong DL, and the health certificate.

Now, this is the current sitUation, YOU CANNOT JUST WALK IN AND APPLY.

You HAVE to sit through their meeting, which I guess is to show you the graphic nature of serious accidents with maiming and killing drivers and passengers, etc.

So they have these meeting 3 times a day, 5 days a week.  They are at 9AM, 10AM, and 1PM.  Was suggested you needed to get there about 1 hour before the sessions starts.  If you do not make, you will be scheduled for the next meeting on that date.  If you miss the 1 o'clock one, come back tomorrow.

THERE IS NO NEED FOR THE MEDICAL CERTIFICATE ANYMORE.

What you need as documents are your old DL, your passport, your Yellow Book (if you don't have one it probably is the same as immigration, copy of your lease and a copy of your landlord's National ID, both signed.)

Oh yes, and 500 baht.

The administrator said your old DL actually doesn't expire for 1 year when you are renewing your license (don't know how true that is with police if they stop you.)

I initially needed a certificate of residence from immigration tm18 not a lease or anything from my landlord. The lease I showed to immigration to get the tm18 signed.
Is this not the case anymore?

In the two times I have gone in for my license, I have never needed a tm18.  Since we now have to sit through the video refresher (and I did not get there in time to sit through it), the clerk said my Yellow Book was good for the residency proof requirement.  Also, there is no need for the medical certificate.

I will find out Tuesday when I go in again to sit through the video.  (Did not want to disrupt my golf days, Friday and Monday).  Will do the 1PM session since my wife will go with me to make sure of the document process then she will go and do a change of address on our one car while I sit through the video!

Just wondering--
When you renew your license, do you have to the reaction time test and vision test ?

The only test that I have taken was the colorblindness test and that was for my first license.
