What will Thailand be like in 20 years?
« on: November 27, 2017, 10:05:44 PM »
Hi ForumMates,

What do you imagine Thailand, and more specifically Khon Kaen, will be like in 20 years? Would you say that the direction Thailand is currently going is generally positive, neutral or negative?

It will become ever more westernised and lose what (little) character it's got.
It's a nice town but I don't think you could ever say it's exciting or full of character at the moment

I think Khon Kaen will be more like Bangkok in 20 years. Not a place to live if you don't like city life. I see how much it has changed in 11 years and that is why we are now looking elsewhere.

Not sure.  More out in the country if I have my say. Not leaving Thailand. Just want to get away from the traffic.

More traffic in all smaller and bigger cities.

Unless something fairly drastic is begun soon, the present Bangkok metropolitan area will be largely underwater, and the capital city may have to be relocated - to Khon Kaen perhaps?

The Bangkok elite will never allow the capital to be in Isaan.  Wrong colored shirts! If you get my meaning................. :)

Chiang Mail would be a better choice in many ways.  But because of the moat, the downtown infrastructure of CM couldn't tolerate it, and it would be a shame to screw up that charming part of the city. But maybe there is land a little further out where they could build a new capitol and suburban residential.  Actually, forget that!  Put New Bangers in Khon Kaen!

Hat Yai could be an option.

The color issue might have changed after 20 years or so.
Agree about the relocation. Most likely to one of the nearer suitable areas to BKK, which is not affected by floodings.

No one is assessing the immediate impact that will effectively change the face of Khon Kaen 20 years from now.  Khon Kaen will be the center of the ASEAN Community.  They are already building part of that infrastructure.  This is probably going to be drastic, even for the people already living here.  the official language of the ASEAN Community is ENGLISH.  There is such a lack of forward thinking by the various school administrations in the whole area of the Province.  Khon Kaen will be a stumbling block for Thailand's position in the ASEAN Community, too much small city thinking.

in 20 year i will probably be well burnt by then but if not what difference would i see!! NONE is the answer the only way you will see a difference is if you left now and then returned in 20 years otherwise small daily changes you would never notice. So in 20 years it would just be the Norm.
to comment on the diffrent tack on this about Bangkok and the capital city moving. I for one dont want the so called HiSo up here let them go south.

I have been here 12 years, and never even been back for a visit.
The change in those 12 years has been immense, and it is so much different since then.
I find it quite bizarre to say that in 20 years time you will not notice any difference.
