Rational, Happy and Kind Holidays 2016

The Christmas season drives me crazy! Color me "minimalist" and scometimes a Scrooge when it comes to the Holidays. However, reduced to it's very essence, Christmas is simply the opportunity to express gratitude and appreciation to loved ones, friends and others, symbolized by the exchange of gifts, and experiencing the simple satisfaction that it brings.

The loving kindness meditation helps to develop appreciation and compassion for yourself and others. Just follow the guide in a quiet and comfortable place for 15 minutes as best you can, without trying to "get anywhere" or acheive any special state.

Aloha, Happy Holidays,

I agree, except I'm not minimalist, I'm zeroist. I gave up being interested in Thanksgiving and Christmas while still in the US, when I realized that most of the people who were in my fond memories of the holidays were gone (either died or separated by distance). This created a lot of marital discord since my then-wife was looking for the ritual that the holidays carries with it (she still had a lot of her family nearby).

When I moved to Thailand, I was hoping to be out of it. Largely, other that the Christmas music at the malls (cringe), I have succeeded. My Thai family has no interest in either holiday. If the holiday falls during the week (as Thanksgiving always does), it's just another workday. If Christmas is on a weekend (as it was this year), my wife makes her standard weekend trip to visit her family in Udorn. I stay home and have a normal, quiet weekend. This year I barely gave a thought to what the day was.

This works well for me.
