Where to find . . . / Distilled Water or Similar
« on: December 20, 2017, 08:11:32 AM »
Does anyone know where to buy large bottles, i.e., gallons, of distilled water or water produced thru osmosis, or electrolysis?

If I remember correctly, Lotus used to carry them but that was 7 years ago.  Now I cannot find anywhere that I have looked.  Have had to buy expensive single liter bottles normally used to replenish water in a car battery.

We have a humidifier.

Open discussion / Thailand Post World EMS Express Service????
« on: December 16, 2017, 04:50:23 PM »
I had previously sent documents and letters back to the USA using First Class Airmail, Registered.  Seemed to take forever to get through the JFK International Mail Distribution Center and then US Customs, but would finally get to its destination after like 13-14 days from beginning to end.

So I decided to go the Express Mail route and spend the 850 baht vs the 115 baht or so.  Thailand Postal indicates that it typically takes 3-5 days from Khon Kaen to its final destination.  So the documents left Thailand (or at least got to BKK) in one day, very similar to the First Class Airmail.  Then it disappeared into the void, just like the First Class Airmail.  It finally was scanned at the JFK International Mail Distribution Center 3 days later, and then was sent to US Customs 2 days later.  It is now stuck in US Customs for the last 2 days.

Thailand Postal has no control of the United States Post Office or US Customs so I probably won't ever spend the extra money to get no better service!

Discuss Shopping / Alibaba's Online Shopping - AliExpress
« on: November 27, 2017, 04:25:33 PM »
Of course my wife got all excited that she could order several items she wanted for the kitchen through AliExpress.

So we ordered using my American Credit Card, easy as pie (for us, they will accept either US Dollars or Thai Bahts, no issue.)

The items are shipped from Mainland China, much like what happens with Lazada here in Thailand.  The items were not large ones and fairly inexpensive.  So they were shipped by China Postal!  They are registered and are tracked so it is easy to follow your order.  They took about 1 1/2 weeks total time, including shipping preparation, to get to Khon Kaen and of course, they go through Thai Postal customs, AND NOT THE USUAL POST OFFICE ON KLANG MUANG ROAD.

CUSTOMER CHARGES:  7 BAHT!!!!

Discuss Travel / 6 day trip: Pathum Thani - Bangkok - Pattaya
« on: November 27, 2017, 04:07:03 PM »
Went to the Rajamangala Technical University for my wife's on's graduation, then on to Bangkok to view the deceased King's Crematorium.

There was a fairly large crowd the late afternoon we made the trip to Sanam Luang, but staying at the Royal Hotel made it fairly easy.  It was worth the walk - wait - walk and view.  What a gorgeous setting.  Oh yes, it was great having my Pink Card, did NOT have to go and register with my passport and get a visitor's pass.

We then went to Wat Bowonniwet Vihara where the King's ashes are enshrined.  This was an easy trip since most people do not know of this move, as of yet.

My wife then wanted to visit the Grand Palace.  Guess what?  The pink card buys you nothing, as a foreigner you have to pay 500 baht.  They also force you to go through the temple, Wat Phra Kaew, which is in close proximity to the palace.  BUT there is no full entrance to allow foreigners or THAIS to view any part of the Grand Palace other than one room that is a museum of ancient weapons, swords and spears, used by the Siam warriors to defend the country and palace!

We then decided to go to Pattaya for a couple of days of doing touristy things.  Just to let you know, all of the places we visited where there is an entrance charge, etc, my Pink Card was accepted as a Thai,  Saved quite a bit of money at each stop, ala 150 vs 500 baht, etc.  That is better than what happens at the National Parks where it is a hit or miss.

Open discussion / Savannakhet, Laos, Border Crossing
« on: October 04, 2017, 09:26:13 PM »
I have seen instances where a few of us farangs use the Savannakhet, Laos, border crossing as a visa run.  Now my question, I know there is large casino (Savan Legend Hotel & Casino) located there and wondered if anyone used the 'facilities' to either earn money or to lose it.  A cousin of mine is planning on visiting us here in Khon Kaen, is a professional gambler, and wondered if it was worth the trip into Laos.  We were thinking of going and checking it out before he comes but would like some insight into the place before we go.  Any help??

A few months ago when Bus Station #3 opened and the push was for all buses departing/arriving Khon Kaen to use this new station, a group from downtown went to the court and got an injunction to stop the push.  They wanted the downtown station to continue to be supported for use even though the government had spent a significant budget to build the new one.

Well, today (or maybe yesterday) the court issued its ruling.  Within 45 days all buses will be required to use only Bus Station #3 and other means of transportation, tuk tuk, taxi, minibuses, etc., would be the means of getting to other parts of the city, especially downtown.

Maybe they will clean up the area around the old station to make it more presentable.

Alerts and News about the Region and the World / Inundated Khon Kaen
« on: July 27, 2017, 07:40:20 AM »
This current weather pattern (25-27 Jul) has been stalled over KKC for almost 36 hours and doesn't look like it will be moving anytime soon.  The Thai social media has shown many videos of flooded streets and areas in and around KKC.  Tropical storm SONCA has caused this widespread inundation of rain.  Check out the weather radar site below:

Visas, et al / Updated Immigration Website!
« on: July 23, 2017, 02:33:17 PM »
Just went to the Immigration website:

https://www.immigration.go.th

It has been completed changed.  It is no longer a bunch of boxes that allow you to pick and chose.  Now it is pull down menus that don't lead to anywhere easy.  It is almost like they changed the forms but what they have done is itemize each subject (not by TM number), then once you click on the 'download' button, you get a TM form in .pdf.

It'll take awhile to get used to the differences.

This is prevalent here in Khon Kaen too.  THIS NOT HERESAY. If your son or daughter cannot pass the entrance test to certain top level schools, the parents 'donate' money to the administrators to bypass the test and their sons/daughters are accepted into the school.  It is probably prevalent everywhere in Thailand!

Open discussion / 2018 Social Security COLA
« on: June 25, 2017, 08:58:16 AM »
See the attached website.  The COLA for 2018 will be about 2% up from the 2017 0.3%.  Medicare premiums may eat up a part of the COLA, but it seems 2018 is going to be better than 2017 net.

Discuss Shopping / Pizza Company Special
« on: June 14, 2017, 08:48:06 AM »
Pizza Company and AirAsia have a special Buy an Extreme Pizza and get a Crispy Thin free.  The promotion is good until 10 July.  You need to use the coupon # AATPC at the time of order to get the special.

I've attached the notice.  I don't think you have to be a frequent flier member to get the special.

Discuss Shopping / Amazon Prime
« on: June 06, 2017, 08:25:42 AM »
I know the Forum has a direct connect to Amazon, but does anyone have an Amazon Prime subscription?  I know you get free shipping in the US if you have a Prime Account, but I have heard all kinds of stories about the shipping charges internationally on "Prime" designated items all the way to free.  Does anyone have experience?

Discuss Travel / Cheap Airfare for the 1st Half of 2018
« on: June 04, 2017, 06:53:03 PM »
Thai Airasia is having a big sale on airfares.  If you are one of their frequent flier members (or become one before you check out the fares), you can get inexpensive airfares to many cities.  Travel from 15 Jan to 28 Aug 2018.

We just made reservations to go from Khon Kaen to Hat Yai in March, 2018.  The regular airfare is 1440 baht (and that is what you will be quoted unless you are one of their BIG members) was discounted to 590 baht!

The seat sale will be open to everyone starting Monday, the 5th of June.
