My eldest daughter has just finished her four years at Khon Kaen University and has been awarded an honours degree.  We are obviously very proud of her.  She will be handed her degree by Princess Sirindhorn sometime in December, date not yet known
Families are not allowed in the hall but afterwards we want  some good photos taken of our daughter in her degree gown with all our extended family.
Can anybody recommend a photographer?

I have the 800,000 needed but don't want to tie it up for months so after 18 years on a retirement extension I am going to go for a marriage extension.
Has anybody been recently and can tell me the  current Khon Kaen Immigration requirements for a marriage extension?  Mine is due in mid-September.
Thanks very much.

My wife thinks that the bags under her eyes look unsightly and wants them removed.  Has anybody had any experience of this in Khon Kaen?  Any recommendations?

Open discussion / Christmas Dinner?
« on: November 20, 2018, 06:13:44 PM »
A tad early, but has anybody heard of  a hotel/restaurant doing a Christmas dinner this year?  (except the Pullman, I'm a poor farang this year)

Open discussion / Change of ATM card
« on: November 20, 2018, 06:11:32 PM »
When I used my Kasikorn Thai ATM card  a couple of days ago I  received a message on the ATM screen that said all cards with 4 digit PIN numbers must be changed for the new chip 'n' pin 6 digit PIN  by 31st December.  So today  my good lady wife and I went to Tesco/Lotus on Mittrapharp to go to my bank.  First surprise, Lotus have introduced a parking scheme.  You get a card on entry which you give back when you leave.  First 3 hours parking is free.  They were so slow handing out the cards that on a quiet morning well before lunch there was a queue back out onto Mittrapharp.  That'll be fun the next weekend when everybody's been paid.  There was also a bemused queue jockeying for position to hand back your card when you left.

Kasikorn bank was busy.  It must be all those small businesses on site. When we got to the customer service desk it took about 15 minutes per card to get the new one. At a cost.  I did have to have a cheaper ATM card because at my age they will not insure me.  And we have three accounts.  6 or 7 sheets of A4 per card, with multiple signatures.  Both sets of signatures for a joint account.  Then the girls serving us has to get a counter-signature from the  girl next to her.  Paperless office?  I should cocoa. The only good news was that they could do your new card even if the account was held at another branch, which one of ours was.  A member of staff followed us outside and showed us how to change the PIN from that provided on the security paper provided with the new card to the PIN we wanted.  My wife and I had sorted the three new PINs out beforehand.
My passbooks were also updated but just gave a total of all debits and credits, no individual items.

So if you only use your card infrequently you must change it before the end of the year.

Open discussion / 3BB plastic payment card
« on: August 22, 2018, 05:35:45 PM »
A couple of months ago we received a card  from 3BB that could be used to pay  our monthly internet bill.  It worked no problem, so last month and this month I paid the bill on the 11th, as stated on the card. But this month, 10 days after paying, we received a bill, as we used to. We happened to be going to Central yesterday so we popped into their office there and asked what did they want us to do, pay on the 11th with the card, or wait for the bill.  Wait for the bill they said.
So what was the point of sending out all those cards?

FAQ, TOS, SPAM Policy / CleanTalk spam protection
« on: June 14, 2018, 03:01:18 PM »
Whilst I fully appreciate the need for spam protection I really am fed up with CleanTalk stopping me logging onto this site every single time.
I always get a message from CleanTalk saying that is suspected of spamming, but when I click on that number I get the message from CleanTalk that it did not match any of their records.  So why stop me logging on then?
My ISP is 3BB and I'm on fibre, not that that should make any difference.

Where to find . . . / Khon Kaen tax office
« on: January 08, 2018, 08:09:11 PM »
I have been having intense discussion with my UK bank, HSBC, about where my tax residence is.  I maintain it's in the UK because that's where my sole income originates via two pensions and it's where I am taxed.   They insist my tax residence is here and were not amused when in that case I asked for all my UK tax payments to be refunded!

I have no income in Thailand and because of having a 'retirement'  visa I'm not allowed to earn anything anyway.

I'm 70 years old next week and long since retired but this time HSBC are getting really nasty about it.  They want a full written explanation (!)  and threaten me with the loss of my UK account which would be disastrous.

So, I may have to go to the Khon Kaen tax office and  get a number which I will never use, just to keep happy some HSBC pen-pusher with a streak of meglomania.  And I thought the Spanish Inquisition had been disbanded.

But where is the Khon Kaen tax office, any help please, and if possible, what do they want from me when I do go there.

Thanks very much,

Where to find . . . / Sticky address labels
« on: June 27, 2017, 07:18:30 PM »
Anybody any idea where I could get some sticky address labels printed?  The sort you peel of a backing strip and fix to the back of a letter to say who it's come from.  Thanks.

Open discussion / Cable TV
« on: April 27, 2017, 04:18:37 PM »
At the moment we are with Khon Kaen Cable TV.  They advertise 150 channels but provide about 130 channels.  Of these 130 about a dozen have nothing on them and are listed as "Future Channel"

But for the past few days there are only about 15 channels with anything on them.  Only channel 2 of the Thai channels is there, Channel 1 to 9 and Workpoint say "no signal".  Of the English language channels all the news channels are missing and only one film channel is present, and that's shaky.  All the sports bar one are missing.

I have  checked my plugs, even cutting the  co-ax feed and making a nice new clean connection, all to no effect.  Then I replaced the set-top-box thinking that was the problem, but no.

So all in all when Khon Kaen Cable come for their money in a couple of months they can go forth and multiply.

But what do I replace it with?  Who has the best cable TV in Khon Kaen?  Any suggestions?

There is a thread on TVisa about a Norwegian man who was renewing his visa yesterday, Friday  9th Dec and walked off with his passport and the paperwork before his visa had been approved and stamped into his passport.  So if anybody knows a Norwegian who was at immigration yesterday tell him to check his passport and get back to KK immigration asap.

Open discussion / #BB internet so slow as to be unuseable
« on: October 11, 2016, 04:26:04 PM »
Foe three or four days now 3bb internet has been so slow.  It took 15 minutes to load this site for instance.  there seems to be a problem with resolving DNS.  I have tried leeting Chrome select the DNS , telling it to use Google DNS and then using Free DNS, but none of them work, ie the site just won't load.  The sites can be within Thailand, eg Kasikorn Thai bank, or outside, eg any UK newspaper, but the effect is the same.

Is anybody else having trouble?

Open discussion / "Heads Up" Number 2 for Retired Brits in KKC
« on: August 04, 2016, 02:52:11 PM »
Nationwide International bank on the Isle of Man has announced they are to close next year.

So if you hold monies there or use them to receive your pension(s) and forward them here, then you will have to make new arrangements soon.

That means I have to contact three different pension providers and try and co-ordinate the changeover to the new account.

It is very hard to open a UK bank account if you do not have a UK address.  Fortunately I still have my old HSBC account so I will have to use that in future.  They seem to be happy with me living here, perhaps because I have had the account now for more than 45 years!  But I will take the precaution of changing my contact address to that of my sister's for most of  a year, just in case.

Open discussion / 90 day report
« on: July 14, 2016, 11:09:41 PM »
Did my 90 day report today arriving just before 1pm.  Not enough desks open plus one agent with a fist full of Cambodian passports tying up one desk meant that it took an hour and a half to be served.  The place was packed with lots standing at the back.

Last time, 90 days ago,  I handed the officer just my 90 day slip and passport which proved to be enough.  This time I did the same but she asked for copies of the photo page and latest entry stamp which I had with me just in case.

Then she gave me the farang report to fill in.  She queried why I had no address in farangland and no contact there either but didn't press the point.

She stamped the slip for 90 days hence until I pointed out my visa extension ran out before then so she amended the slip with that date.

Perhaps they were busy because of  the long holiday coming up this weekend and next week, but the Khon Kaen office is getting much busier.  Thank all the gods we don't have to go up to Nong Khai anymore!
