Services for the home / Sofa Upholstery
« on: January 15, 2018, 11:59:47 AM »
Does anyone know of a good place to get a sofa upholstered? Have one that I really like with double reclining seating.
Preferably a place that will pick up, since it is rather large and heavy.

Visas, et al / What to show Thai Immigration when living in wife's house
« on: January 03, 2018, 07:10:46 AM »
For those of you that may have your own homes in Thailand, and by that I mean your wife's house.  I say this because of Thai law permitting only Thai citizens from owning land.
What is it, that you show Thai immigration when  doing your extension of stay?
Do you have a lease from your wife? Or, do you have a usufruct?
We are considering building a house and I was curious as the best way to go.

Open discussion / Holiday Driving
« on: December 26, 2017, 07:57:04 AM »
Something I am not looking forward to. But, it has to be done.
The wife and I are driving to Roi et, tomorrow. I always made it a point not to drive during the holiday season. The roads are dangerous enough the rest of the year. But, we must meet with the Land Office people in Phon Thong, Roi et. They are surveying  the wifes land on the 28th so that they can issue her a chanote.
Apparently she has to be there.  Not sure what is the best time of day to travel during this time of year to miss the idiot drivers coming from BKK to the villages. I did tell the wife. As soon as they are done, we are heading home to the safety of our house and not going anywhere until at least the 3rd of January. :-\

Deep Thoughts (Hehehe . . .) / Is Khon Kaen the dirtiest city in Isaan?
« on: October 29, 2017, 10:01:47 AM »
Is it just me or is Khon Kaen a really dirty place? I have traveled to almost every city in Isaan and have found Khon Kaen to be the filthiest.  Go around any of the lakes in the city and there is nothing but rubbish and bottles and every kind of plastic thing on the ground.
Upon entering from any other province, you can tell you have crossed the line into Khon Kaen just by the rubbish on the ground.
I watched the other day a pickup truck driver dumping out a load of trash on the side of the road on the ring road. Of course, nobody says anything.
In my area of Mueang Kao, it has to be the worse.  Just came back from Sakon Nakhon a couple of days ago. What an amazing city. Absolutely spotless. Hardly find a piece of paper on the ground. Even around the market area. When we got back to Khon Kaen, I felt I needed to take a shower after driving through town.

Stuff wanted / Looking for VHS Tape Player
« on: October 13, 2017, 09:59:04 AM »
I need a VHS Player to copy some old VHS tapes to my computer. My machine went  Tits up. Of course, no place fixes them anymore. So, if you have a working VHS tape player that is in good working condition and willing to part with it. Please let me know.  I'm sure we can come to some agreement.

Services for the home / Weed and Vegetation Killer
« on: October 03, 2017, 04:08:30 PM »
Anyone know where I can get some decent Weed or Vegetation Killer. I need it for my driveway. Weeds and grass are growing between the cracks in the tile. It is becoming rather unsightly.
I would not be opposed to making some homemade stuff. If anyone has a good recipe, I might be game to trying it. As long as I don't have to go buy a lot of things that I normally would not have any use for.

  Please advise.

Alerts and News about the Region and the World / UBER COMES TO KHON KAEN
« on: September 22, 2017, 07:10:31 AM »

I hope this works out well. Used them extensively in the States. Good service
One thing I didn't happen to notice though. Are the drivers going to be English speaking?  Not completely necessary but would be nice.

Open discussion / Dash Cams for Insurance Discounts
« on: August 22, 2017, 10:44:44 AM »
The Thai government put out a press release a while back that insurance companies will be giving a discount on auto insurance for those with a dash cam.

Well, yesterday I renewed my insurance for another year and asked about the discount since I have a dash cam. The agent told me that this was only for new cars. I explained that there was nothing in the release that stated such a thing. He then called the company in BKK and he was assured that it was only for new cars or trucks.
Needless to say, this kind of pi@sed me off. But, I kept my cool and paid what the normal annual cost was. When all was said and done. I told the agent. If you want to see what is on my dash cam, so you don't have to pay anything in an accident that is not my fault. It is going to cost you. Or you can just pay what ever the cost will be. I have the best insurance I can purchase for my vehicle, so I am covered pretty well. So, I am not too worried.
I still like the dash cam, just in case I end up in court and need to prove my innocence.
So, just letting you know that if you are in the market for a dash cam. Buy it for your own piece of mind. Because, unless you are purchasing a new car. There will be no discount. >:(

Does anyone know what has happened to Fox News on Khon Kaen cable?

Open discussion / VHS to DVD
« on: August 03, 2017, 09:59:08 AM »
Does anyone know of a place in town  (Khon Kaen) that can copy VHS tapes to DVD? These are my own movies, not anything commercial. So, there is no copyright infringement.
I would even be willing to go to Udon Thani if that was the closest.
My tapes are old and so is my VHS player. Everything was recorded in NTSC, so it might have to be converted also.

Any info would be appreciated.

Open discussion / Copy of Blue Book
« on: July 12, 2017, 01:08:14 PM »
Was coming back from Mahasarakham yesterday. Had to go through a small portion of Kalasin.  A road checkpoint was set up and of course all the cars ahead of me were waved through.
Being the only Farang in the line I guess I already knew I was going to get waved over.
The BIB came to my window and with the usual wai by me and the salute by him, he requested to see my driver's license. I obliged.  Then he wanted to see my Blue Book, (owners book)  for the truck. My wife explained to him that it was home in the safe with other important papers.
He then explained that there was a new law and that the book must be carried in the vehicle or at least a copy of the page, saying who owned the vehicle.
The wife then had to go to a table with a bunch of cops around it. There, they wrote out a ticket and charged us 300 baht.
So, I guess a word to the wise. Carry at least a copy of your blue book or what ever proof you have that you are the owner of the vehicle.
What I find really funny is.  I could not provide proof that I owned the vehicle, but after paying I was free to drive off in it.... TIT

Does anyone know what holidays KK immigration will be closed? Specifically July. I know there is a Buddhist holiday coming up around the 9th + 10th. I need to do my 90 day around the 14th. I would like to do it early if I can, because I need to go to BKK and get my affidavit of income for my annual due in Aug.
I know Udon is having an U.S. embassy outreach on the 21st, but I also need to go to JUSMAG THAI in BKK for the wife, so I can kill 2 birds with one stone.

Doctors, Clinics, Hospitals / Does anyone know where this dentist is?
« on: June 18, 2017, 09:31:35 AM »
My wife even called. The girl at the desk can't give directions to save her ass.. She doesn't want to give explicit directions unless I have an appointment, and I don't want to get an appointment unless I know exactly where it is.
The address doesn't really work well.
If anyone knows where this is, with a landmark for reference. I would really appreciate it.

Discuss Shopping / Time for new eye glasses
« on: April 24, 2017, 07:21:54 AM »
It's that time again. Time to get some new eye glasses. Been looking around and have found that for some reason, glasses in Thailand are really expensive.
Not sure why.
Does anyone know of a good place in Khon Kaen that sells decent eye glasses at a reasonable price? The big chain with the blue and white sign that begins with C and is on just about every corner and in every mall is very expensive, so please don't recommend that place.

Open discussion / Just curious about Bocce
« on: March 18, 2017, 05:01:17 PM »
Are any of you part of the group that I see playing Bocce at Kaen Nakhon lake in the mornings? Just curious. I always wanted to know how to play that game.
I used to watch the old men playing it when I was a kid. Well, I guess now I am the old man.
